This
exercise was about breaking any rule to help produce something
creative. At first I could only think laws that I wanted to break but
that kinda went against the guidelines. After much deliberation, I
decided to break a rule in painting.
I
was always taught to use multiple brushes of different sizes and shapes
when working on a piece. Whenever I needed to change colors I would
have to thoroughly wash the brush to make sure no pigment is left. I had
to do this even if I was done using that specific brush. Since it was a
lengthy process I always felt I was losing time on my painting. I
decided to experiment with skipping the cleaning and used only one brush
for the entire piece.

The
result was not as cool as I had hoped for. Breaking the rule just made
it incredibly hard to mix any colors. I even picked something that was
full of color, hoping that some of them would bleed together in an
interesting way. Most of the colors, especially the pink and red, turned
into a grayish brown mess. I had to go over areas multiple times just
to get the color close. When I had been working for an hour the brush
was so thick with paint that it was almost impossible to get any fine
details in.
Even
though I did manage to save some time and finish the painting rather
quickly, this was probably more difficult than the method that I was
taught. After doing this little experiment I think I am going to follow
the rules for a little bit longer... at least until I can perfect this
technique.
